Abriel Gardner

WE SHOULD ALL BE ANTIRACISTS

Some people ask, ‚Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?’ Because that would be dishonest. Feminism is, of course, part of human rights in general – but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. It would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded. It would be a way of denying that the problem of gender targets women. That the problem was not about being human, but specifically about being a female human. (Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi: We Should All Be Feminists. London: Fourth Estate 2014. p. 41)

Abriel Gardner

I met Abriel in 2018 in Seoul, South Korea. Coming from Los Angeles, she was an exchange student at the Korea National University of Arts. Being almost the only foreigners in the Dance Department, we sometimes went for coffee together. On one of these occasions I asked her what the first thing was she wanted to do after finishing her studies. She said, "I want to do an internship at an art space where I will have to work really hard..." – and thus the way to Millstatt was predestined. In the summer of 2019 she joined me at ART SPACE stift millstatt for almost three months as my assistant. She worked on the dance production 'butterfly tales' and the symposium 'POSITIONEN 019 | Discourse and Dialogue in Contemporary Dance'. Abriel did not come alone, she brought her dog Bowie – our summer mascot of 2019.

Abriel skilfully moves between the art disciplines installation, film and dance. I like her approach to film making, which ist both witty and poetic. But I especially like her installation La La's Dream Machine, which she enriched with humor and life as co-designer. This work was shown at the 2018 Calarts Expo.

Artist Statement
Abriel is known for her whimsical style which embraces both the humor and ambiguity of day to day life. She utilizes silliness and absurdity in her practice to create works that encourage the audience to question the paradigms present in both art and life. Abriel interrogates the value systems surrounding binaries and seriousness, finding them to be restrictive and exclusionary. She hopes that her work can provide a sense of relief and joy to her audience and can foster a more imaginative and open-minded community.

hi andrea here are a few photos from a vigil I attended a few weeks ago. It was a tender moment and felt good to gather with people without having to see a gun or the police. It was a time to grieve and hold each other. something that a lot of people have not had the chance to do. It was a reminder of how important it is to take the time to process what is actually happening in this world. I feel very small in my efforts but I am trying my best to stay vigilant and strong throughout this.
I hope you are doing okay!!

We won’t back down in fear
Change is here and it’s happening now. No longer can we endure this system of senseless violence and oppression. We must use are masses to instigate change, we need to keep our communities engaged and informed. We will not lose our strength. Keep talking, keep organizing, keep spreading your power. Let’s hold each other accountable to stay kind, to stay focused and unyielding in our message. We have the power to make real change. BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Hi andrea things are still very chaotic here but change is slowly starting to happen. Its surreal to see the national guard and army tanks surrounding the streets. theres lots of helicopters too.

Anna Zampetti

After studying German and Italian at the University of Vienna, Anna Zampetti came to Carinthia to ensure the best life possible for the love of her life – her dog Louis. After finding her cultural refuge at ART SPACE stift millstatt, she did not want to leave anymore and is now part of our team. With text and research work at the büro für tanz | theater | produktionen she assists the think tank lead by Andrea K. Schlehwein, which conceives and organizes in-house productions and also guides works by external artists. For the upcoming 2020 productions cREATING cOMPOSTION / archipelago / robotic MELANCHOLIA, she brings in her theoretical approach, which as an external perspective will further expand our field of vision.

WE SHOULD ALL BE ANTIRACISTS

Given the intersectionality of discrimination, a reference to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie seems appropriate. In her 2014 essay We Should All Be Feminists she put in a nutshell much of what is currently being discussed in relation to ethnic discrimination.
In the course of the protests against police violence #blacklivesmatter following the death of George Floyd, a comprehensive and far-reaching collective outcry from Black Communities is developing once again, with a force and volume that has long been overdue. And it is frustrating to see how blind and deaf and ignorant many people are in the face of these healthy developments, and how, employing the same dull arguments over and over again, they try to protect their privileged position in a structurally racist society.
The "less harmful" amongst them justify themselves with a naive notion of general equality by responding to #blacklivesmatter with the mollifying slogan "all lives matter". Well yes, generally yes, of course ... but in this context it leads to People Of Color and the uniqueness of their experiences with racism being made invisible.
By analogy, I would like to quote the Nigerian writer Adichie and her views on gender inequality:
Some people ask, 'Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?' Because that would be dishonest. Feminism is, of course, part of human rights in general - but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. It would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded. It would be a way of denying that the problem of gender targets women. That the problem was not about being human, but specifically about being a female human. (Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi: We Should All Be Feminists. London: Fourth Estate 2014. p. 41)
Since 2013 at the latest, a historically grown, differentiated and complex discourse has developed with the BlackLivesMatter movement, in which preferably not everyone should participate and speak freely without second thoughts. Within this discourse, one can and will say a lot of wrong things – for the simple reason that we (in Western, Central and Eastern Europe as well as in the former colonized countries) live in a racist society that has created a hierarchical distinction between groups of people, institutionalized it and made it the basis of its own white self-image. To those who sit in their comfy armchairs on their privileged behinds, who watch the news, who "stay out of it " and at the same time cannot show any understanding for the protesters or at least keep their mouths shut, I say the following: Start questioning yourselves! You are not what you are... you become it. And this within a pre-shaped environment that sets norms and structurally distributes power positions... and now, surprise, a big revelation: this distribution is not just, not fair, not equal ... it is discriminatory, racist and sexist.

As a white, Central European person, I recognize my position and I can see which discriminatory experiences I was spared. And that is why, after this indispensable statement, I will keep silent and I start listening, because this seems appropriate to me these days.

Danke. Herzlich.

Dear friends of NETZWERK AKS,

I am happy that things now continue this year, when the focus of my work – with the tour program and the new productions of 2020 – was originally on the first six months.

We have rescheduled, shifting events that were planned for next year into the current one.

This can only happen because my artistic and organisational work is being supported by the artists of NETZWERK AKS – through thick and thin. I would like to take this opportunity to thank YOU Netzwerkers for your loyalty, patience and great flexibility.

The new beginning is possible only with the help of sponsors like the Federal Chancellery of Austria, which has acted quickly and prudently, and because of the uncomplicated support of our landlady at ART SPACE stift millstatt. The state of Carinthia, after many, many years, has granted a three-year subsidy again. My heartfelt thanks go to all of them.

You can support us and all other dance artists, artists in general as well as all stakeholders who understand society as a living organism by going to see art, enjoying it, buying it, enriching and supporting it with your presence!

Thank you. Sincerely. Andrea K. Schlehwein

But now on to the actual new program for 2020!
