#bones @ Tsak Bam Festival Greece

Text: Maria Mavridou . Photos: Roman Zotter

On 12th of July, Roman Zotter and I had the pleasure to represent NETZWERK AKS at Tsak Bam Festival – a contemporary arts festival on the island of Aegina in Greece, which we co-organise together with a team of artists.

We created a new adaptation of the piece # bones, an original concept and choreography of Andrea K. Schlehwein created in collaboration with the two of us.
For the new adaptation we decided to stay close to the original structure and material with the desire to observe and study small mutations happening because of the different environments.

The pistachio field where the performance took place in between the trees filled us with new sensations. It was precious to work under the open skies with the moon above and the sea breeze.

No lines. No walls. The sense of orientation completely altered.

Earth, stones and dry grass under the feet and many little thorns - which I still try to remove from my clothes - brought an extra challenge to each shift of weight, reminding to not take any movement for granted. Experiencing the body anew because of the environment.
In the absence of lines outside, the desire to create geometrical shapes with the body grew.
The triangle as a shape felt perfectly suited to this place for some unknown reason.
Creating a little 'stage' in between 3 trees and playing endlessly with triangles connecting points in constantly changing distances.

Child-like joy. A gradual invitation of new points / fragments of imaginations and memories / mixing the seen with the unseen / creating an experience of being there and inviting the possibility of being anywhere else at the same time.

After the performance we received very positive responses about the work. People were deeply moved by the intensity, depth, articulation and freedom. Some of them to tears...

The little figurines standing on the ground prior to the performance were perceived as an art piece on its own and were photographed by many people from the audience. They kept asking who the artist was who created them... some people even made very interesting connections between these figures and Cycladic art.

I had to smile, knowing what they were: mass produced plastic figurines for architectural models that we bathed all together in whitewash (the same material we use to paint the well-known postcard image houses on the Greek islands of Cyclades) because there was simply no time to color them carefully one by one...

Most people were especially intrigued by the part with the mask. They felt it is rich and full of potential and it should develop as a piece on its own.
It makes a lot of sense to know that in September we are going to Goyang in Korea to do exactly this: Dedicate time to study and expand this part into a new version of the piece together with Korean dancers.

Many young kids saw the piece, a fact which made me worried because of a part that feels a little scary to me. In this part I wear a mask and I "eat" some of the small figurines. After the performance one 5 year old girl came to ask me what I wanted to say by doing this. I asked her what she thought and she said that it is about abusing each other in this world. She said she wasn't scared when she saw it, but she was concerned if she would have bad dreams.
Then another 7 old girl came to tell her "Art is art. There is no scary in art. Let's play!" and so they did.

I still don't know what this means, but her conviction was so joyful. I love to take this statement with me in order to continue exploring the world of #bones.

A picture by Anna Itkonen who was
intrigued by what was left after the
performance. A destruction scene...
Another artist asked me about my specific relation to the earth of the island because for her the piece was centring there.
For me Aegina's earth is about facing and overcoming basic fear.
Meanwhile Andrea's directions from previous versions of the piece (hearing the death knocking on my door - stopping for a moment - but deciding to continue) ring in my head. New connections are forming in my brain about this piece's relation to death.

I feel this work has a long future and I am in the very beginning.
Stirring my existential soup, each time diving to bring out a new fragment on the surface.

Looking forward to the new journeys...

GOLDEN SHADOWS – a few notes....

...from the first period of rehearsal at ART SPACE stift millstatt

Arriving. Meeting the former process that took place in ART SPACE through the bodies exploring the resonances of the Symposium POSITIONEN 019. Meeting Andrea, Eleonore and Unita, and several more people already in dance mood. Meeting all in transition and, after our Argentina experience, allowing so the open curiosity to let the same space to start insinuating and suggesting what new forms Golden Shadows will embody here.

Installation. Performance. Dance.

Art forms aiming for simple and concrete exploration of our actual nature in fragile and delicate balance, always shifting, always moving. An art form that invites for sensible reflection of our nowadays sense of shared reality.

We have written already that the rehearsal process for GOLDEN SHADOWS is based on exploring our perception of body as a (sub) conscious moving space entity, a space where subtle impulses are flowing and leading. We practiced these days with Unita listening to those signals rooted in the hidden realms of its physicality; arising, expanding and dissolving in a continuous dancing dialogue with the surrounding. We found objects on our way to the studio, discarded and natural ones. We went on excursion for getting some others. We discuss and try on their potential utility, for organic actions, their expressive power, their sense of building landscapes and unfolding environments. Creating containers, passages, membranes where the performance will take place, the installation will invite to the visitors to accompany, sit, interact and contemplate.
And in those spaces our bodies are also pure space. Our bodies resonating among each other, also with images, figures and their individual an common memories. Our bodies inspired by sensing, by touch, by text, by textures.

“The dance appeals to the natal clumsiness. It appeals to all the gestures of the children.
It doesn't know how to speak. It does not know how to sing. It doesn't even know how to lift the foot. It doesn't even know how to support it. it does not know how to join the palms, separate them, hit them, produce a noise. The dance appeals to the silent body that inhabits all life in another body that precedes - in another body that is no longer there. The dance appeals to the body before language (to the original body, the ovular body, the embryonic body, the fetal body, the natal body, the infant body). To the body before the self. To the body before the subject position. To the body before the face. To the body before the mirror. To the body before the skin. To the body before the light.” (Pascal Quignard, Origin of Dance)

From Monday on, we will be on the way for the setting up of the installation. Some days

more for the opening night. Almost one more week to nurture our body-scapes, and let to these Golden Shadows to emerge as a new born organism attracted by the light, offering the opportunity to tell us a little bit of what is nesting there in those realms where the shadows reign and life silently pulse.

butterfly tales  | Premiere 27. Juni ART SPACE stift millstatt

butterfly tales | premiere 27 June 2019 ART SPACE stift millstatt

butterfly tales, the second NETZWERK AKS production 2019 by Andrea K. Schlehwein, will be premiered on 27th June 2019 at ART SPACE stift millstatt, Austria.

chaos theory I questioning

The flapping of a butterfly's wing on one side of the globe triggering a great effect on the other side. This scientifically unverified idea is transferred to our dance rehearsal work.

Each impulse, no matter how small, has an impact on the inner workings of the body. Action is followed by reaction, input by consequence.
How transparent and fine-tuned do we need our dance technique to be in order to make this approach apparent from the outside?

'butterfly tales' is a contemporary ballet, dense in terms of dance, visually multi-layered, dynamically exciting. In Andrea K. Schlehwein's choreography, the three dancers Unita Gay Galiluyo from the Philippines, Jye Hwei Lin from Taiwan and Eiji Takeda from Japan let stories emerge without telling stories.

reality I mirroring

A departure towards a self-chosen narrow line, a horizon, where bipolar pairings like dream and reality, change and stagnation, logic and poetry, enigma and clarity, complexity and plainness, manipulation and self-determination, utopia and dystopia meet.

I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering through the air. When I woke up, I asked myself whether I was a man who dreamt to be a butterfly, or if I am a butterfly who dreamt to be a man.
Parable by Zhuang Zi

perspectives I alienating

Surveillance . Control . Censorship . 'butterfly tales' is a loose collection of various performative scenes committed to a contemporary dance language and playing with reality and dream, manipulation and control, loss of power and censorship, confusion and clarity, the manipulation of moving images, mirroring, reflections, loneliness and self-assurance, creating a free space for rich associations through a wide range of visual, filmic and physical possibilities.

Within a complex stage setting of several illuminated spaces that come into view or remain hidden depending on the angle of the light, visually rich with elements of film, live camera, mirrors, monitor and various projection screens, the audience is encouraged to find their own perspectives and viewpoints. The observer's eye actively decides which pixel, which monitor, which sequence it wants to follow. Whatever is considered interesting will determine what is called 'reality'.

#bones in Seoul

Last week we had the pleasure to be part of SIMPRO, Seoul International Improvisation Dance Festival in South Korea.

On the 24th of April we presented a new version of #bones, the latest Netzwerk AKS production by Andrea K. Schlehwein, Maria Mavridou, Roman Zotter as part of the Opening Impro Performance (60min Relay + Impro project) shared with artists Jeong Ho Nam, Young Ho Nam, Irina Hortin, Cyrus Khambatta and the groups Momuro Movement Lab and 14 Feet.

During the festival days, 23rd - 28th April, we also had the chance to participate in the artists’s improvisation jam at the Impro Event of the opening night, join Irina Hortin’s workshop and watch some beautiful performances. It was wonderful to reconnect with old colleagues and get to know new ones!

The process of creating the new version of #bones for SIMPRO has been exciting. We gave ourselves the challenge to transform a 45 minutes performance / installation that took place at ART SPACE stift millstatt in between the art works of Woo Jong Taek, Robert Kabas and Ha Haengeun, with the audience freely walking around, into a 10 minutes version for a black box theater.

What was to be left out and what was to remain? How could we keep the essence of the
work alive?

Circulating ideas, re-activating the memory and re-imagining the work, meeting new spirits in an empty space with the help of 7 fragile eggs. We ended up with a new version that shares the same sources with the previous one,  becoming more aware of what it is as it is evolving, finding its form by overcoming form.

As a performer I feel that this piece has so many dimensions which still unfold and I am curious to explore them further. The challenge of different set-ups and contexts is definitely interesting in relation to the concept.

Looking forward to performing again on the 15thof May at ART SPACE stift millstatt, re-visiting the original version with the influence of Korea and to the new surprises of Tsak Bam Festival which will take place outdoors in a pistachio field on the island of Aegina, Greece in July.

Gamsahamnida Seoul and Simpro!!
It was once again a soulful experience!!

Cyborgkätzchen im ART SPACE stift millstatt

The Feline Project transferiert das Phänomen „Katzenvideos“ auf die Bühne.
Der Suchtfaktor bleibt hoch.

zum studio showing von Dagmar Dachauer: the feline project
i n : f o r m a l   |   12. April 2019   |   ART SPACE stift millstatt

von Anna Zampetti . Fotos: Roman Zotter

POSITIONEN I Diskurse + Dialoge im Zeitgenössischen Tanz Kärnten

Ohne theoretisches Back Up und inhaltlich fundierte Reflexion mag die Kunst durchaus bestehen.

Komposition. Ergänzend dazu: Fachmethodik (bereichert durch anatomisches/physiologisches Wissen), Tanzgeschichte, Bewegungsbegleitung (Paukentechnik), Bewegungsnotation (siehe Buch Lex/Padilla)und Bewegungszeichnung.

Historischer Hintergrund & Heutige Entwicklung

_Die Günther-Schule München_

From ELEMENTARER TANZ to the LEX PADILLA DANCE CONCEPT

Elementarer Tanz – Lex Padilla Dance Concept

Our wish is to help the ‚dancing human being‘ develop a language which has such rich and personal words at its disposal that the very nature of the speaker becomes unambiguously apparent.“ Maja Lex & Graziela Padilla

The concept Elementarer Tanz began as an independent branch of free dance in the 1920s, emphasizing the development of musicality, sense of rhythm and creativity. It was founded by the dancer, choreographer and teacher Maja Lex (1906-1986) at the Günther-Schule München (1924-1944). In 1955 the concept became part of the educational program of the German Sport University Cologne. Here Maja Lex further developed her holistic concept of pedagogy in cooperation with Graziela Padilla, her "Meisterschülerin“ and successor from 1974 onward. Together, they established this concept as a branch of contemporary dance.

Methodology

Foto: Lily Higgins
Teaching Elementarer Tanz does not impose any specific dance technique. Instead, the bases of technical dance training are guided perception processes and experimenting with the possibilities of one's own body movement. A chief characteristic of the classes is structured improvisation, which serves as both inspirational source and a connecting element between physical training, sense-schooling and choreographic work. Classes are structured around themes and teachers switch fluently between inductive and deductive method. The freedom given to the dancers stimulates their self-discipline and self-responsibility. The range for one’s own development is set by the dancer him or herself.

Principal content

Technique, improvisation and composition are taught through body work, rhythmical movement-forming and movement-creation. Other contents are methodology (including anatomical/physiological knowledge), dance history, rhythmical accompaniment (kettledrum- technique), movement notation (see book Elementarer Tanz by Lex/Padilla) and movement sketching.

Historical background & current development

_Die Günther-Schule München_
Maja Lex started as a student at the Günther-Schule before she became one of its leading teachers together with Gunild Keetman and the founders Dorothee Günther and Carl Orff. This forward-looking school offered three different courses designed to integrate movement and music education with rhythm as common ground. The school's intention was to stimulate the creative power of its students and to free their ability to experience rhythm in a pure way.

Maja Lex developed a new movement and dance-education, which is unique for its timeless pedagogic and artistic value. She liberated herself from existing exercises and instead fostered variety of movement through variation on the rhythmical, dynamic, spatial and formal level. Maja Lex's pedagogic orientation had been influenced by Carl Orff's elementary music education (Orff-Schulwerk). In analogy to musical improvisation in his teaching, structured improvisation became a regular feature of her classes. As a solo-dancer and choreographer of the Tanzgruppe-Günther München, Maja Lex pioneered the development of the New German Dance (next to Mary Wigman, Harald Kreuzberg and Gret Palucca). Lex received numerous national and international awards for her achievements. Maja Lex created a unique dance language for her choreographies, which were acclaimed for their enchanting rhythmical intensity, their distinctive sense of form and their high technical discipline. Music and dance evolved into elements of equal weight. The school had its own dedicated dance orchestra conducted by Gunild Keetman and all dancers and musicians were capable of switching roles. Dancers might even play instruments while dancing: „Dance experts are spellbound and amazed by the brilliant technique and discipline of the ensemble, the originality, vitality and fantasy of the choreographies, which are purely based on rhythmical-dynamic variations, as well as by the unfamiliar archaic music of its own orchestra.“ (Archiv ET)

The choreographies of Maja Lex, both from her period in Munich and in Cologne, can be classified as absolute, pure dance: „There is no intention to fulfil, no intention to communicate, no intention to portray, it is self-fulfilling.“ (Fritz Böhme, 1930).

_German Sport University Cologne_
After long periods of illness and the destruction of the Günther-Schule in World War II, Maja Lex started her second working period in Cologne. From 1955 until 1974 Lex taught at the German Sport University Cologne where she established the subject Moderner Künstlerischer Tanz in 1958 , later renamed as Elementarer Tanz. Together with Graziela Padilla she kept refining this holistic concept of dance pedagogy, which is akin to today`s aesthetic dance education. During the following 26 years, Padilla, as head of department, decisively influenced the development of the concept Elementarer Tanz, taking up contemporary influences in the process. The concept was introduced and spread on a national and international level through demonstrations, performances and courses. Furthermore, its choreographical diversity was showcased by different ensembles, such as Tanzgruppe Maja Lex and Padilla Tanzensemble Köln.

_New Development_
In 2014 the concept Elementarer Tanz was recognized by the German UNESCO commission as part of the intangible cultural heritage in Germany together with the Chladek-Systhem, Laban/Bartenieff-Bewegungsstudien and the Jooss-Leeder-Methode. Early 2017 Projekt Elementarer Tanz was launched by Graziela Padilla and Alina Jacobs. The project aims to continue and develop the concept Elementarer Tanz further in its current version, named Lex Padilla Dance Concept.
