Jo – der Mann mit der Kamera (1946-2024)

Im Oktober 2024 starb Jo Hermann, ein vielseitiger Fotograf und treuer Begleiter von Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS, der über viele Jahre hinweg unzählige Tanzproduktionen von Andrea K. Schlehwein fotografisch dokumentierte.

Hier ein Auszug aus der Abschiedsrede von Andrea K. Schlehwein:

Tanz zu fotografieren ist schwer. Jo hat sich dieser Herausforderung immer gestellt und fast alle meiner Stücke zu irgendeinem Moment ihrer Entstehung dokumentiert. Viele Stücke, über viele Jahre – ein Stück meiner Zeitgeschichte.

Jo war immer der Situation zugewandt, er brauchte Zeit anzukommen, seine Utensilien griffbereit zu ordnen, Ruhe und Vertrauen. Er war entspannt und sehr konzentriert zugleich, er wusste, ich hatte meine Vorstellungen und ich wusste, er würde sie umsetzen.

Besonders war jeweils die Stimmung, denn egal, wie nah er meinen Tänzerinnen dabei auf den Leib rückte, gab es nie Momente der Beklemmung ihrerseits. Jo war da, mit da und man konnte ihm vertrauen in der Ausgesetztheit des eigenen künstlerischen Tuns.

Im Namen aller Künstler:innen und Mitarbeiter:innen von Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS: Danke, lieber Jo, für die vielen tollen Fotos, deine Verbundenheit zu Kunst und Kultur, ruhige Ausstrahlung, dein freundliches Lächeln und deine jahrelange treue Begleitung.

Jo Hermann, a multifaceted photographer and loyal companion of Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS, sadly passed away in October 2024. Over many years, he had documented countless of Andrea K. Schlehwein's dance productions in his photographs.

Here is an excerpt from the farewell speech by Andrea K. Schlehwein:

Taking pictures of dance is difficult. Jo has always taken up this challenge and documented almost all of my productions at some point during their creation. Many pieces, over many years – a part of my creative history.

Jo was always attuned to the situation. He needed time to arrive, to organise his equipment, calmness and trust. He was relaxed and very focussed at the same time, he knew I had my ideas and I knew he would carry them out.

The atmosphere was always special. No matter how close he came to my dancers, there were never any moments of uneasiness on their part. Jo was there, there with with us, and you could trust him while being exposed in your own artistic creation.

On behalf of all the artists and colleagues of Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS: Thank you, dear Jo, for the countless great photos, your committment to art and culture, your calm being, your friendly smile and your many years of loyal companionship.

Kärntner Kulturvogel für Andrea K. Schlehwein und Eleonore Schäfer

Carinthian cultural award "Kulturvogel" for Andrea K. Schlehwein und Eleonore Schäfer

Mit dem Kärntner Kulturvogel werden seit 2017 jährlich Menschen ausgezeichnet, die sich unermüdlich in der Schaffung und Verbreitung von Kunst und Kultur engagieren, „die scheint's einen Vogel haben, weil sie sich so viel für die Kultur im Raum Kärnten/Koroška antun und im Gegenzug sehr wenig bis gar nichts dafür bekommen.“ (Gernot Fischer-Kondratovitch)
Der Preis wird von Gernot Fischer-Kondratovitch und VADA – Verein zur Anregung des dramatischen Appetits – verliehen.

Since 2017, the "Kärtner Kulturvogel" has been awarded annually to people who are tirelessly committed to the creation and promotion of art and culture, “who seem to have a screw loose because they are doing so much for culture in the Carinthia/Koroška region and receive very little to nothing in return.“ (Gernot Fischer-Kondratovitch)
The prize is awarded by Gernot Fischer-Kondratovitch and VADA – Verein zur Anregung des dramatischen Appetits.

Die Dankesrede von Andrea K. Schlehwein
anlässlich der Preisverleihung am 11. January 2025 in Klagenfurt

[English translation below]

Wir leben in wilden Zeiten.

Die Herausforderungen, mit denen wir konfrontiert sind, werden nicht kleiner - im Gegenteil, sie werden zunehmen und Farbe und Form verändern wie ein Chamäleon.

Wir sollten wach und aufmerksam bleiben und unser Bewusstsein für die Art und Weise, wie wir miteinander umgehen, im Denken und Handeln schärfen.

Dass die Lage insgesamt schwierig ist - gab es schon oft.

Zeit fließt
in Wellen
rauf und runter
runter und rauf
Also:
kein Grund zur Verzweiflung ...

Doch einen bemühten Begriff, der das unermüdliche Tun von Menschen in Kunst und Kultur begleitet, nämlich den der Resilienz, möchte ich ersetzen, und zwar durch LEIDENSCHAFT, denn die ist unser Motor, treibt an und zeichnet uns aus.

Mit UNS meine ich jetzt nicht nur Eleonore und mich, sondern UNS alle,
die wir Kunst kreieren, erarbeiten, präsentieren, fördern und finanzieren, vermitteln, kaufen, unterstützen, ermöglichen ...

Dank unserer Leidenschaft erkennen wir eine wesentliche Grundeigenschaft der Kunst an, nämlich ein lebendig FRAGILER, ein wertvoller Bestandteil unserer Gesellschaft zu sein.

Und was fragil und ungepanzert, empfänglich und verwundbar ist,
muß geschützt werden!

Im Japanischen Denken existiert das MONO no AWARE – das So Sein der Dinge.

Meint: zerbrechlich, mit sichtbaren Spuren des Alterns, mit Ecken und scharfen Kanten versehen, also: nicht immer einfach zugänglich...
Und manchmal komplex und verworren gestrickt ...

Das MONO no AWARE bezieht auch die für jede Gesellschaft so wesentlichen Möglichkeitsräume mit ein, in denen individuelle Kunst- wie Lebenskonzepte auf facettenreiche Art und Weise, unvermittelt und direkt imaginiert und verworfen, postuliert und diskutiert werden.

Dies geschieht durch AKTION und DENKEN mit Mitteln der Kunst,
in alltäglichen Räumen, wie dem der SPRACHE.

Und gerade hier sind die Veränderungen alarmierend, die wir in der letzten Zeit an Stammtischen und in einigen Ecken der Politik erleben mussten, das Ausspucken von Phrasen, die Auszusprechen noch vor Jahren undenkbar und im gemeinschaftlichen Konsens ein NO GO gewesen sind.

Diese öffentlich und ohne Scham geäußerten Überlegungen und Handlungsaufforderungen tragen in keinster Weise dazu bei, das Fragile, das im Werden begriffene, das Schwache, das Schöne, Zerbrechliche, das Humane zu schützen.

Wir wissen: unsere Aufmerksamkeit ist gefordert, Orte der Kunst mit ihrem breitgefächerten, also auch politischen Bewusstsein zu erhalten.

Ohne diese Räume der Imagination, die in der Lage sind, flexibel zu agieren, sich neu zu erfinden und öffentlich zu äußern, wird unserer Gesellschaft insgesamt nicht wieder gut zu machendes, gewachsenes und wesentliches fehlen. Denn hier entwerfen und verhandeln Menschen als Community, in welcher Gesellschaft sie leben wollen.

Die Künste sind nicht nur eine Form der Reflexion, sie sind die Grundlage für unsere gemeinsame Zukunft.

Orte wie diese werden auch zukünftig aus Geldmangel aufgeben.

Und einen Ort zu schließen, das geht schnell und leicht, ihn wieder mit Leben und Kontent zu erwecken, das dauert oder geschieht gar nicht erst.

Aus diesem Bewusstsein heraus sind wir NOCH da und es wird in der nahen Zukunft einiges an phantastischen Entwürfen, Leidenschaft und praktisch umsetzbaren Konzepten brauchen, um Orte, Gedanken, und nicht zuletzt auch Menschen und gesellschaftliche Errungenschaften zu schützen.

WIR freuen uns sehr über den Kulturvogel, den wir als Team und als sichtbare Anerkennung gerne entgegen nehmen, zumal es ein ausgesprochen spezieller Preis ist, weil: von Kolleg:innen für Kolleg:innen!!!

The acceptance speech from Andrea K. Schlehwein

at the award ceremony on January 11th, 2025 in Klagenfurt.

We live in wild times.

The challenges we face are not becoming smaller - on the contrary, they will increase and change color and shape like a chameleon.

We should stay awake and alert and sharpen our awareness of the way we treat each other in thought and action.

The fact that the situation as a whole is difficult – we've seen it many times before.

Time flows
in waves
up and down
down and up
Therefore:
no reason to despair ...

However, there is one much-used term that accompanies the tireless endeavours of people in art and culture, namely resilience, which I would like to replace with something else, with PASSION, because this is what drives us, drives us and sets us apart.

By "us" I don't just mean Eleanor and myself, but I mean all of us,
all of us who create, develop, present, promote and finance, facilitate, buy, support, enable ...

Thanks to our passion, we recognise an essential basic property of art, namely to be a lively, FRAGILE, valuable part of our society.

And what is fragile and unarmoured, receptive and vulnerable,
must be protected!

In Japanese thought, there is the MONO no AWARE – the suchness of things.

Meaning: fragile, with visible traces of aging, with angles and sharp edges, and therefore: not always easily accessible...
And sometimes weaved in complex and tangled ways...

The MONO no AWARE also includes the spaces of potential that are so essential for every society, in which individual conceptions of art and life are imagined, postulated and discussed in multifaceted, immediate and direct ways.

This happens through ACTION and THOUGHT with the means of art,
in everyday spaces, such as the space of LANGUAGE.

And it is precisely here that the changes we have seen in recent times down in the pubs and in some corners of politics are alarming – the spewing forth of phrases that were considered unutterable some years ago and were a NO GO in the collective consensus.

These publicly and shamelessly expressed thoughts and demands for action do not in any way contribute to protecting the fragile, the evolving, the weak, the beautiful, the fragile, the humane.

We know that our alertness is called upon to preserve places of art with their multifaceted, therefore also political, awareness.

Without these spaces of imagination, which are able to act flexibly, to reinvent themselves and to express themselves publicly, our society as a whole will lack something that cannot be made made up for, something that has grown, something essential. Because this is where people as a community draw up and negotiate the kind of society they want to live in.

The arts are not just a form of reflection, they are the foundation for our common future.

Places like these will continue to disappear in the future due to a lack of funds.
And it is quick and easy to close a space, but to re-awaken it with life and content takes time – or will not happen in the first place.

From this awareness, we are STILL here and in the near future it will take a lot of fantastic imagination, passion and practically implementable concepts to protect spaces, thoughts, and. last but not least, people as well as social achievements.

WE are very happy about the Kulturvogel, which we gladly accept as a team and as visible token of recognition, especially it being a very special prize: from colleagues for colleagues!!!

Looking back on Spring and Summer 2024:
An intense and exciting season of collective gathering and co-creating: living and working together.

This season we had the opportunity to meet each other deeper artistically and personally within NETZWERK AKS and to strengthen our bonds with the local community through artistic activity in the broader region of Carinthia.

Under the artistic direction and vision of Andrea K. Schlehwein and a team of 12 people:

the all-year, all-weather team of Brigitte Büsken and Eleonore Schäfer with the assistance of Laura Rossbacher

In Bleiburg, next to performing [ FIGUR X ] excerpt at the Lange Nacht des Tanzes, we also joined the Traces of Artists, a public space performance / co-creation with other participating artists of the Lange Nacht curated by Anna Hein.

At ART SPACE stift millstatt, a collection of photos from some previous productions of Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS was presented as part of the exhibition Trajectory Lines by Forum Kunst contemporary [FKc] and #curatedbyaks (photos by Sang Hoon Ok, Martin Schinagl, Jens August amongst others)

ImPulsTanz Public Moves

In the area of education and community, we had the pleasure to be part of Public Moves / ImPulsTanz Klagenfurt with the workshop Living Presence by Unita Gay Galiluyo and Jye Hwei Lin curated by Anna Hein, Fio Losin and Rio Rutzinger.

At our home base ART SPACE stift millstatt we run regular week-long O . P . E . N morning classes lead by Unita Gay Galiluyo, Jerneja Fekonja, Jye Hwei Lin, Maria Mavridou, Petra Peček and Andrea K. Schlehwein.

Here we expanded our study and understanding of movement, enjoying the guidance and diversity of approaches of each of our members joined by highly enthusiastic and inspiring participants from the region.

Parallel to that we were happy to continue our collaboration with 5 Elements Films and start a new collaboration with the photographer Jens August, our neighbour and owner of Galerie August Emporium at Stift Millstatt. Jens joined and photographed our process and performances of [ FIGUR X ].

Next to striving for high quality work, but caring for more than just promoting and selling products, we continue to cultivate a vision of diversity, exchange and dialogue through art in relation to the environment and we love maturing together in the length of time.

Our lively kitchen gatherings after the rehearsals and performances, always cared for and catered by table 13 / Brigitte, speak of the warmth and joy we share in a basic human sense.

All productions and activities were made possible with funding from BMKOES and Land Kärnten and the support and management of büro für tanz | theater | produktionen.

And... as our spirits are nurtured by creating, do stay tuned! We have new plans in mind and we are looking forward to the exciting creations of next season!

Currently our members Unita Gay Galiluyo, Jerneja Fekonja and Petra Peček are deepening their research by developing solo work in the frame of A.I. R. Residencies @ART SPACE stift millstatt #curatedbyaks.

We are curious where their work will lead them!  More announcements will follow soon!

In Bleiburg nahmen wir, neben der Aufführung von [ FIGUR X ] in der Langen Nacht des Tanzes, auch an den Traces of Artists teil, einer Performance im öffentlichen Raum in Co-Kreation mit anderen teilnehmenden Künstlern der Langen Nacht, kuratiert von Anna Hein.

Im ART SPACE stift millstatt wurde als Teil der Ausstellung Trajectory Lines von Forum Kunst contemporary [FKc] / #curatedbyaks eine Auswahl von Fotos einiger früherer Produktionen von Andrea K. Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS präsentiert (mit u.a. Fotos von Sang Hoon Ok, Martin Schinagl, Jens August).

Im Bereich Kunstvermittlung und Community hatten wir das Vergnügen, im Rahmen von ImpulsTanz / Public Moves Klagenfurt – kuratiert von Anna Hein, Fio Losin und Rio Rutzinger – den Workshop Living Presence von Unita Gay Galiluyo und Jye Hwei Lin anzubieten.

In unserer Homebase ART SPACE stift millstatt wurden regelmäßig einwöchige O . P . E . N morning classes unter der Leitung von Unita Gay Galiluyo, Jerneja Fekonja, Jye Hwei Lin, Maria Mavridou und Petra Peček und Andrea K. Schlehwein abgehalten.

Durch die Diversität der Bewegungsansätze unserer Teammitglieder und die Teilnahme mehrerer Tanzbegeisterter aus der Region hatten wir die Gelegenheit, unser Verständnis von Tanz und Bewegung weiter zu vertiefen.

Negotiations in Silence

Parallel dazu setzten wir unsere Kooperation mit 5 Elements Films fort und begannen auch eine neue Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fotografen Jens August – Nachbar im Stift Millstatt und Leiter der Galerie August Emporium – der uns während der Vorbereitungen und Aufführungen von [ FIGUR X ] begleitete und fotografierte.

Wir haben einen hohen Qualitätsanspruch, aber es geht uns nicht nur darum, Produkte zu bewerben und zu verkaufen: wir wollen weiterhin eine Vision der Vielfalt, des Austauschs und des Dialogs auf künstlerischem Weg kultivieren und uns gemeinsam, in Verbindung mit der Welt um uns herum, weiterentwickeln.

Unser gemütlich-lebhaftes Beisammensein in der Küche nach den Proben und Aufführungen, betreut und bewirtet von table 13 / Brigitte, zeugen von der Wärme und Herzlichkeit, die uns auf einer grundlegend menschlichen Ebene verbinden.

Kitchen Karaoke

Alle Produktionen und Aktivitäten wurden durch Förderungen von BMKOES und Land Kärnten sowie die Unterstützung und das Management des büro für tanz | theater | produktionen ermöglicht.

Vielen Dank an alle, die dabei waren, uns begleitet, unterstützt und sich mit uns ausgetauscht haben!

Und... weil die Kreativität uns nicht loslässt... bleiben Sie dran! Wir wälzen bereits neue Pläne und freuen uns auf die spannenden Kreationen der nächsten Saison!

Derzeit arbeiten unsere Mitglieder Unita Gay Galiluyo, Jerneja Fekonja und Petra Peček im Rahmen einer A . I . R . residency @ ART SPACE stift millstatt #curatedbyaks an neuen Tanzsoli. Wir sind schon gespannt, wohin ihre Arbeit sie führen wird!
